The Rosarium preserves South Africa’s heritage roses and is completely organic and supported by companion planting.
Horticulturist Gwen Fagan designed the garden and documented the history of these old roses, tracing their journey from the time of Jan van Riebeeck in 1657 to the arrival of hybrid tea roses in 1910.
Many original rose rootstocks were brought over by the 1820 British Settlers and survived in farms and graveyards due to the area's harsh climate and lack of nurseries.
In 2011, the South African Heritage Rose Society established a sanctuary at Bedford’s Camelot Arboretum, where the roses flourish among indigenous plants, filling the garden with fragrance and history.
